What if earth had two moons?

Moon is such a beautiful thing, isn’t it? There is a single moon on earth , we all know that, 79 moons on Jupiter, 2 on mars and none on mercury. So, what if earth had 2 moons? Read on to find out.

Well, that won’t be great. Moons help in generating tides(yea the sea tides). So, in the case of 2 moons, the tides will amplify(the moons being close to each other), thus eroding shorelines and flooding many parts of the world. And in the case the moons being far away from each other, there will no tides(as the moons cancel out each other).

Not only about the tides, the combined pull of the earth and the first moon would have an effect on the second moon. The second moon would be caught between the gravitational pull from both the ends, which would trigger volcanic activity on the second moon.

Also, the existence of the second moon would slow down earth’s rotation, so a single day may be longer than 28 hours. Sounds good about having extra time in our busy lives? But this is actually where the real trouble begins.

The second moon would drift towards the first one, eventually leading to collision. It will have such a huge impact, where the cores of both the moons will be destroyed, with lava erupting from the center. Debris would go racing in every direction, some of striking earth as well. If not, the debris will be caught by the earth’s gravity, forming a ring of debris around the equator(like the rings of Saturn) which, within a few years would be one large body.

A city in China wants to launch an artificial moon by 2020 as a way to save energy(replacing street lights and all).
